Raising Money for Cure Leukaemia
Here at Central Mailing Services, we are happy to report that a member of our production team is soon to be raising money for Cure Leukaemia by cycling from London to Paris. Machine operator Matt has been a cyclist most of his life. It’s only within the last few years he’s taken the leap from everyday commuter to long distance traveller, fully dressed in lycra of course.
In 2011, he cycled from John O’Groats to Lands End and labelled it “the hardest thing he’d ever done!!!” Rather ironically, it was this trip that put him off cycling for the next 2 and a half years. This seen him pack up the hobby and placing his bike into storage. Towards the end of 2013, Matt was made redundant from his previous job. This admittedly left him feeling more than a bit sorry for himself. The following months saw him amass 23st in weight – It was at this point he realised change needed to be made.
He started dieting immediately and within weeks the weight started to fall off. The bike was taken out of storage and his passion for cycling was soon reignited. After a few weeks of exercise, the fitness levels increased, the distances increased and ultimately, the weight drastically decreased.
In 2014, Matt signed himself up for the Great Birmingham Half Marathon, running for Cure Leukaemia. It was at this point where he found out about the London to Paris bike ride happening in June 2015. Seeing the opportunity, he challenged himself. To complete personal challenges as well as raising money for Cure Leukaemia on the way.
Former Wolves, Crystal Palace and England footballer Geoff Thomas has been an inspiration to both patients and clinicians ever since his bone marrow transplant ten years ago as he has selflessly worked to increase treatment options for blood cancer patients. For Matt, it is a huge privilege to be working with him to maximise curative options for patients from across the United Kingdom.
Leukaemia is a cancer of the blood that usually begins in the bone marrow. It can affect anyone at any age, and Cure Leukaemia has been fighting back for more than ten years.
Around 12,000 people die from blood cancers in Britain each year. The prospect of survival for many adults with the disease is still less than 50%. This is exactly why your support is so vital and so valuable.
The charity was established in 2003 to allow patients with blood cancer, like Geoff, access to the remarkably effective new treatments that are continually being developed.
By joining Geoff on this inspirational journey from London 2 Paris, you’re helping to inspire a revolution in blood cancer treatment. Every £10 you raise can be used to leverage £100 worth of pioneering treatments. Ultimately, helping people suffering from this terrible disease and moving us ever closer towards a cure.
