Mark Homans
This is your Direct mail life!
Hi Mark, thank you so much for joining us today.
First up, a little about you.
You work for Central Mailing Services, how long have you been with them?
5 Years
How long have you been in this industry?
8 Years
And before that, where did you cut your teeth selling so to speak?
I spent many years running my own company in the direct Labour market in the Construction Industry cold calling Construction companies looking for projects. Then 8 years at Yellow Pages in its prime generating new business and expanding existing clients to maximise their potential ROI. In their day they were classed in the top 10% of sales organisations for training and results in the Country.
After that time in the industry, I bet you have a story or two to tell. What is that you really love about the print and mail industry?
Building relationships is absolutely key we offer a great value service and once your clients learn to trust what you deliver, I have clients going back the 8 years I have been in the industry and have I love helping grow their business as well as ours.
Its changed so much, in a pretty short period of time, what has been the biggest change you have seen?
Automation and the development of sustainable packaging products, the old Polywrap days are gone with the introduction of Potato Starch which has now moved on even further with paper wrap and the like.
Looking at where the sector is now, what do you think the future holds for it?
I believe we have a great future especially with the younger generation coming on-board more, email now is not the trusted method it once was, a fantastic, designed mailing piece now is worth it’s weight in Gold. The younger generation have not been used to receiving Direct Mail and are excited about it, Great opportunities lie ahead.
Any big challenges or changes you can foresee?
We have a little uncertainty with Royal Mail transition in ownership, It is all about setting expectations to clients and maximising efficiency in using the client’s data correctly maximising any potential available.
Indeed, I think it will be very much a case of watch this space. Outside of work, what do you like to get up to? A little bird told me you enjoy the game of Rugby.
Rugby was a big part of my life, I went to a Rugby School and played from the age of 11 and packed up at 45, I also enjoyed Cricket and Golf and was a Club Captain
Did you play when you were younger?
When at School we were taught Rugby just like a Maths lesson
Any other sports that you enjoy?
I also enjoyed Cricket and Golf and was a former Club Captain
I know that you like to travel, where is your favourite destination?
Rome the Eternal City, The Architecture and the History is absolutely amazing as well as the fine dining.
Very nice, sounds loverly. Now then on holiday you can let your hair down so to speak, what is the barman bringing to your table in the bar?
In the heat of the day a cold lager, with a meal a good Italian full bodied Red.
Tell you what, make that two! As we look to wrap up, one last question, what one piece of advice would you give your younger self when you first started out in sales?
Always listen two ears one mouth, your clients will tell you will learn much more when they are doing the talking not you. You will gain their specific business requirements and needs which is crucial to providing the best solution.
Fantastic, thank you so much Mark, it has been a real pleasure. Really appreciate your time and what I would say is, that if you have any requirements at all for print and mail work, please do get in contact with Mark @ markhomans@centralmailing.co.uk
